"ONE PRAYER" Messages that didn't make the cut.

I'm checking out of the blogging world until we get back from our mission trip to Jamaica... I'll have plenty to post on June 8th when we get back and as we begin One Prayer.  Just for fun I thought we could take a look at some One Prayer messages that wouldn't make the cut... or would they?
These are messages you won't be hearing from any of the 1100 churches coming together for the One Prayer Series:
  • Lord, make us BIGGER.
  • Lord, make us WEALTHY.
  • Lord, make us POPULAR.
  • Lord, make us EFFICIENT.
  • Lord, make us NICE.
  • Lord, make us ORGANIZED.
  • Lord, make us SAFE.
  • Lord, make us COMFORTABLE.
  • Lord, make us glad that we don't have to pray those prayers because you've already promised that you will build YOUR Church and the gates of hell won't prevail against it.
Talk to you on June 8th.

Getting ready for Jamaica

I can't believe in 3 days our team flies out to Jamaica for our Mission Trip with A.C.E.  We're pumped about it and I believe we are ready.  I prayed this morning for each member of our team.  I prayed for God to work through all the logistical issues and allow us to see Him at work in even the smallest of details.  I'm so excited that my whole family is going on this mission project.  I have some very specific things I'm praying for God to show them through their experience in Jamaica.  I believe this could be a catalyst to launch them to a "whole 'nutha level" (sorry Ed Young, Jr.) spiritually.  The great thing is that when I leave the country, I know that Journey won't miss a beat... we have a ministry team that is awesome... Andrew is going to teach and he showed me his message today... it's going to be great... you don't want to miss it!  Zach and Justin are going to be leading worship and doing all the very cool techo creative stuff.  We have a group a amazing volunteers that will step in for the others on our mission team and will do a fantastic job.  That's what I love about being part of the Body of Christ.  There's something about the body of Christ in motion that pumps me up.  Speaking of the Body of Christ... Our next series called, "One Prayer" is all about the body of Christ.  It's all about the Kingdom of God.  It's all about how over 1100 churches, all different shapes, sized, structures, strategies can come together as one for the month of June and simultaneously focus on being the Church, the body of Christ in motion.  More about that later... but I believe this could become one of the greatest moves we've made as a church, to participate with 1100 other churches worldwide to advance the Kingdom by coming together as one!

Sunday/Monday Rewind

I have a love/hate relationship with holiday weekends.  I love them because it gives everyone a chance to relax and spend time with family... I hate them because we never know what to expect in attendance.  It was down yesterday, but the lower attendance was overshadowed by the fact that God showed up in some very powerful ways.  We said hello to a full band again...yes they were awesome.  We said goodbye to Sara Safavi... she leaves for Ghana and the Peace Corp for 2 years.  We're going to miss her around here.  We crashed a growth group cookout after church and watched real community forming... it's very cool because that's what I preached on yesterday.  It's wonderful when you see the stuff you teach being lived out... thanks Jay and Bethany Howell... we had a great time.  We are leaving for Jamaica in 5 days!  Can't wait!  Lots to do between now and then.  Plus... I've got to get my One Prayer message ready before I leave for Jamaica.  I am ready for this series... almost 1000 churches worldwide, heading in ONE direction, focusing on ONE thing, pooling money for ONE enormous missionary/church planting venture. It's going to be amazing.  You want to get your friends to this series... I promise they won't be disappointed.  Today is Memorial Day... We're going to cook out, go on a picnic, stay home from work for a little while, hang out with the family...the reason we can be "off" today is because a soldier is "on".  Thank you to all the military men and women who have given their lives so that we can live free.  As you enjoy this day... thank a solider!

Birthday Boy!

My son, Seth turned 14 today.(actually yesterday the 22nd... the post didn't make it up until today) Cant' believe it.  Next year he starts driving (YIKES)!  Seems like yesterday he looked like this.   N714425534_73267_6630

I am proud of him.  Both he and his sister, Abby, are growing up to be amazing Godly teenagers.  Sure, there is the occasional time when we ever wondered why we had kids... but we're so blessed that they love God and make wise choices.  Happy Birthday son... I love you.

David Wins!

I called it from the top 24!  David Cook.  He's the man... the American Idol!  I'm glad.  I'll probably buy his album.  I'll listen to it and put it on the stack with Bo Bice and Ruben Studdard.  Now, when is 24 coming back on?

Just Gotta Brag!

I had to go to a meeting this morning and it ran over through lunch... I left Zach and Justin at the office working on the weekend and the summer worship stuff.  When I called to let Zach know I would be late getting back to the office they said that's OK they were in "cleaning mode".  I wasn't sure what that meant but when I got back I could tell those dudes had been working.  The office was clean, it smelled good and they had been to my house and took the futon out of my office at home.  These guys, in addition to doing ministry very well, are good at tidying up the place... just had to brag on them.

Sunday/Monday Rewind

Did you ever have one of those days where you didn't feel like blogging?  Today's one of those days.  Yesterday was one of those days at church where I looked around and a lot of folks were out and I wondered, "how are we going to gain momentum if we can't seem to get past certain growth barriers?"  Then this morning I got a call from a friend of mine that said their attendance and offering tanked yesterday.  I'm not sure what it was, but I quickly remembered something Chris Elrod posted a couple of weeks ago... I told him I was printing it out and reading it every Monday... today was one of those days I needed to hear it. Here's what he said:

Most of the times pastors write about how pumped up they are about Sunday and how this week’s service was the best ever.  While Compass Point has been having some really great services recently and every week there is a new attendance records…this week was not one of them. We dealt with a BUNCH of technical problems today (mainly sound…which is always a problem in a gymnasium) and attendance was pretty ugly. To top it off I wasn’t really “on” today…the sermon was pretty weak in my opinion. In essence it wasn’t one of our better Sundays at Compass Point.

Not too long ago a day like today would have Denise hiding the sharp objects around the house. These days I don’t sweat it too much when we have less than great days…because days like today are not all that common any more. Most Sundays are good…some great…a few fair…rarely are they bad…today was fair. It’s not that it doesn’t still bother me…it does…it just doesn’t drive me insane like it use to.  I’ve come to realize some things going into my fourth year of this thing called church planting:

1. I know my church and my town. Compass Point and Lakeland is not like anywhere else in the world. I was reading some other pastor’s blog this week and they were excited because Mother’s Day is a big day for them…not Compass Point. Traditionally Mother’s Day has been a low attendance Sunday…mainly because people in Lakeland head out-of-town for Mother’s Day. Attendance will be back up next week…I can say that because I know the community, the church…and we keep pretty good records.

2. It’s a marathon not a sprint. Church planting is not a sprint…quick out of the gate and quick to the finish line. It’s a marathon where you have to pace yourself and take in every separate stage of the race. This week didn’t go so hot…last week did…next week is coming…and it will be better.  When a bad service occurs…sleep on it…meet about it…rattle somebody’s cage when needed…compliment when needed…be realistic with your assessment…and try to do better next week.

3. It’s never as bad as you think it is. I learned back in my comedy days that my perception…is not what other people necessarily see. There have been some pretty bad days at Compass Point…and pretty bad sermons…and folks will still send emails saying how great the service was. I guess what I’m saying is that I’m my own worst critic…while I know where we dropped the ball…and want to make we don’t drop it again…the folks sitting in the seats don’t always pick up on it.

4. We don’t need to hit a home run each time at bat. There are a BUNCH of perfect churches with perfect “Ken and Barbie” pastors here in Lakeland. One of the things that actually draws people to Compass Point…is the imperfection. Other church pastors I know would freak out over the imperfections we let slide. We know our people…we know Lakeland…we know what disconnected people in this community are drawn to. It’s not perfection…high tech…or excellence.  While it is never an excuse for mediocrity…some days our “dropped balls” reach more people for Christ…than the days when everything goes according to plan.

5. Safety only comes in never taking risks. Some of what we dropped the ball on today was experimental stuff. We experimented with our projector and speaker placement…it didn’t really go over well. We also used a lot of video today…something we don’t normally do…it went over pretty good. I tried to color outside the lines a little with my sermon…it felt unprepared and too off-the-cuff. However, we learned a TON today…and it is helping us take the next steps in our journey. Basically some of what happened today was because we took some risks. The day we stop dropping the ball on Sunday is the day we stop taking risks. The day we stop taking risks is the day…I quit and sell insurance. :-)

In conclusion…if you had a bad day at church today…go home…take a nap…enjoy your family…and let it go.  Fix what you can fix…ignore what you can’t…and take comfort in knowing next week you get another shot at it!!!

I needed that this morning... to be reminded that Journey Church in Auburn, Alabama is not like ANY OTHER CHURCH IN THE WORLD...but I'm so blessed to be the pastor of some really great people, and some really broken and messed up people.

$221,342

No, that's not my salary.  That's not even our church budget yet.  $221,342 represents the amount of debt families and individuals at Journey committed to KILL during our ReThink Money Seminar last weekend.  Just got the number from Casey Graham.  He's jacked up about what happened last Saturday.  It was as much a spiritual experience as it was a financial one.  Just imagine what can and WILL happen in the Kingdom with $221,342 freed up to impact lives for Jesus. People will be able to experience greater opportunities and options for their families;  Kid's education will be funded;  Retirement will be funded;  They will have opportunities to explore mission projects and help plant new churches all over the world.  It's amazing the freedom and options you have when you don't have debt looming over you.  That's exciting to me.  I believe God's going to bless our church because of the commitment you have made to kill the debt in your lives.  I believe God is going to use our church in a big way because of your obedience to invest in Kingdom causes.  Yesterday I was in Birmingham at a Developing Churches Roundtable and the topic was Missions Mobilization.  It was no accident that we committed to pay off debt because I believe God has something BIG for us to be a part of in the coming days.   More on that later.

Project Generosity Response

Warning:  This is going to be a very long post.  These are some of the stories from Project Generosity... we closed out our Mad Money Series with a "reverse offering" and gave away over $1000 and asked people to be generous and bless someone with the money they were given.  Here are the stories. Yep... I had to use tissue.  I'm so blessed to pastor a church where you guys are so generous.  The project isn't meant to be over just because you "spent" the money.  Now it's time to look for ways to be generous every day!

Name:  Nathan.  Amount: $20.  Your story: I recently had an encounter with a man named scott who had this awesome testimony, and ultimately started this nonprofit organization that builds wells in Africa, India, and Indonesia. I am sure that many of you have heard of or maybe even taking part in a similar mission, like Journey Church's coffee thing.   I know that my $20 is going straight to Africa. Also that the amount I gave will provide one person in Africa with clean water for 20 years. Wow. They also do not only go into these places and dig a well and leave, but they teach locals in the area how to do it. Most recently, through the giving of several donors and the blessing of a tv broadcaster, a commercial aired for the charity during American Idol a few weeks ago.

name: zaneta
amount: 20.00
your story: Well I was given 20 and my son Quentin was given 10 so we just combined ours and gave it to my second cousin and her family. They just lost everything due to their house burning down. She was very thankful.

name: Christel
amount: $20
your story: A couple in my neighborhood have been having a rough time. The husband just lost his job, and the wife is not working due to a recent surgery. I found out about the couple through my realty company. When I asked them to give the money anonymously as a gift. The realtors were extremely touched by the act and could not believe that someone would just give money away. Through this one innocent act, several lives were affected, including my own.

name: Jeremy and Rachel,  Jay and Bethany
amount: $15
your story: There is a student in my (Rachel's) 4th grade class who is often neglected and could always use a little more love. She is without a snack almost everyday, unless she has been with her foster parents. She complains of being hungry and that her stomach hurts almost everyday when she does not have a snack. Our group put our money together to buy her snacks for the rest of the school year. Today, she did not have a snack, so I told her that there are plenty of snacks just for her and that she has one waiting for her each day until the end of the year. She smiled and of course wanted to know who they came from. I told her that it was an anonymous person who wanted to give her a gift. She gave me a hug and said thank you.

name: Helene, Sherry, Rachel
amount: $50 combined
your story: Sherry, Rachel and I put our money together and bought a Wal-Mart gift card and a candle for Ms. Finley for Mother's Day. We picked her because she lost her 12 year old daughter(Jasmine) this past fall and we thought it would be a tough Mother's Day for her this year.We wanted to let her know that we were thinking about her and that people at Journey Church cared about her and her family. Our hope was that she would be encouraged on what probably will be a tough Mother's Day. Thank you Journey Church!

name: The Rogers Family
amount: 50+10+10+10+10
your story: Our family combined and used the money that we were given to help two little boys that are apart of a broken family. We have a friend who owns a daycare who told us about these little boys' lives. Not too long ago the mother tried to commit suicide and had the boys in the bath tub ready to drown them, when the father came home. The mother is now in jail and the father is taking care of these children. They do not have much of anything. Our family used this money to help buy clothes and health care items for these boys.

name: Marco & Brandi
amount: 20.00
your story: We combined our money and did something special for all the mothers at my job. We found out what the ladies favorite treats were and made 'Mother's Day Take-Out Boxes' which included ALL of their favorite treats. Everyone loved it and were really excited to receive a gift with their favorite yummies!

name: Zach Benson
amount: $20
your story: Well, I'm out here in Pasadena California. Don't be too jealous, it's been overcast the ENTIRE trip, no sun for me! Anyway, my friend that i am visiting out here is involved in a minsitry that serves the homless of LA, it's called 'PATH' i will be giving my money to this organization. Here's their website to check out more. http://www.epath.org

name: Bobby
amount: 20.00
your story: There is a girl I work with who is my age and has 3 kids. I really knew she could use the money, so I gave it to her.

name: Mandy Seales
amount: $100
your story: As soon as I looked in my envelope & discovered I had $100, I knew that I could use it to really help someone. So, I prayed about it & I kept coming back to a couple that we go to church with @ The People's Church @ Oak Mountain. I kept questioning it - am I really hearing God's voice on this? So, I did nothing for a few days, then I decided to share it with my women's Bible study group to get their input. When I told them who I was thinking about, Theresa (our pastor's wife) immediately spoke up. She said that Sunday (which is the same day I received my money) someone came up to her at church & gave her $100. They told her that God had laid it on their heart to give her the money & they didn't know why, but they wanted to be obedient to God's calling. So, she took the money & prayed about it & God led her to give her money to the same couple I was thinking about. So, to sum it up, both of us received the same amount of money on the same day & felt like God was leading us to give it to the same couple.
